Which Thayers Witch Hazel Is The Best? – And Is Witch Hazel Worth The Hype?

Thayers Witch Hazel Review

Thayers Witch Hazel Review. Every time I watch a Youtube video on affordable skincare products for oily skin, I see someone raving about Witch Hazel. Witch  Hazel is not new in my routine though. I’ve been using The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% for months now, and that contains Witch Hazel too.

However, I was curious to try it as a toner. After some research, it seemed to me that Thayers was the best brand to go with. I’ve been using the Thayers Witch Hazel for some months now and here are my thoughts on it.

What is Witch Hazel? What does it do?

Here’s some product information from the Thayers website.

Made of extract from the Witch Hazel shrub (Hamamelis Virginiana) and a blend of other time-tested ingredients – THAYERS® Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Formula Astringents and Alcohol-Free Toners are soothing, natural treatments that cleanse, tone and soothe your skin. THAYERS® are the only Witch Hazel products made of non-distilled extract from the Witch Hazel shrub maintaining the highest levels of therapeutic tannins.

I also found a few more claims around the web.

Some of the ways witch hazel can be used include:

  • To remove make-up
    • Thayers Premium Witch Hazel Toners are great for removing make-up and freshing up your face
  • Under your eyes
    • This will reduce bags under your eyes because of the anti-inflammatory properties in witch hazel.
  • On sunburns
    • By applying it to your sunburn, it can help prevent your skin from pealing and can heal it faster
    • Since Thayers products with witch hazel have Aloe Vera in them too, the two combined can be powerful on your sunburn
  • On bug bites
    • It can soothe bug bites and reduce itchiness

Thayers Witch Hazel Review – Lemon, Rose Petal , Lavender.

I am more concerned with it’s effects on the facial skin though, as one of the claims which  made me seek it out was that it balances excessive sebum production, thereby reducing the oiliness of skin, which in turn can reduce the occurrence of acne and improve the look of blemished skin.  It also claims to reduce the look of acne scarring because of its healing properties. In the weeks of using this, I have found all this to be true. My skin feels less oily when I use this, and when I feel a new spot coming on, I clean my face with this and a lot of the time, the next day, the spot disappears. If it is a really determined pimple and it is still there the next day, I switch to the Acne.Org Benzoyl Peroxide.

Overall, I do really like this. I love it as an everyday toner, especially for oily skin.  It keeps my skin balanced, prevents excessive oiliness and this gives this healthy look to the skin, which I am thinking has to do with its healing properties. I am currently using Alpha Arbutin so I can’t ascribe the fading of my acne scars to this, but thats not to say that it does not fade acne scars, just that I am using other products that do that same thing. This has not broken me out.

Which Thayers Witch Hazel Is The Best?

The Thayers Witch Hazel you should use depends on your skin type.  I currently use the Lemon, but when it is done I am switching to Lavender. I also like the Rose Petal.

I would suggest Lavender for skin that is sensitive, acne-prone, or both.

I would suggest Rose Petal for normal to dry skin, or even oily skin too. Just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean everything in your routine needs to be anti-oil. Sometimes a little bit of hydration actually helps combat excessive oiliness.

I would suggest Lemon for oily, acne-prone, non-sensitive skin.

Here is some information on the different flavours.

All three flavours mentioned in this post contain aloe vera by the way:

Aloe vera is a great skincare ingredient because it contains anti-inflammatory properties that help skin manage inflammatory problems such as eczema, acne, or psoriasis. Aloe is also packed full of antioxidants that help the skin stay firm and moisturized. Aloe helps to decrease redness and inflammation while increasing collagen to generate the growth of new cells. It’s full of moisture that allows for the skin to be hydrated without clogging pores or becoming greasy. It is great for any skin type that wants to add moisture while soothing the skin.

Rose is full of natural oils that help restore the skin and make it as smooth as possible. The natural sugars in the petals help to soothe sensitive skin. Our rose toner hydrates the skin and has a natural astringent in the petals that tightens pores, leaving the moisture in, and free radicals out. It’s also full of Vitamin C, which is crucial for collagen production and strengthening skin cells. Together they enable scars to heal faster and for skin to look it’s very best.

Lavender is an agent used to reduce redness and irritation. Lavender is full of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help manage acne and calm sensitive skin. Not only does lavender help calm the skin from the outside-in, the smell can physically calm you as well. It is extremely gentle and perfect to use on all skin types, especially those that are sensitive or acne prone.

Lemons are known for their brightening components. Being rich in vitamin C and citric acid, lemons are able to lighten age spots, freckles, and acne scars by boosting collagen production. They are acidic and contain high amounts of anti bacterial anti fungal properties, reducing bacteria, and excessive natural oils on the skin. Lemon is great for oily or acne prone skin that needs a little extra attention.

Rose Petal and Lavender are alcohol-free, while the Lemon flavour contains alcohol.
