Skincare Samples: First Impressions and Mini Reviews – Sunday Riley, Glamglow, Kate Somerville, Algenist etc

One of my favourite things about shopping with Sephora (and pretty much most standard cosmetic retailers) is the free samples! I love samples because they are a great way to try a product at home with no pressure before going ahead to make a purchase. I have acquired quite a few samples this year. In this post I will discuss skincare samples, and in another post I will discuss makeup samples.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and Rose Face Mask

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and Rose Face Mask

Every year, Sephora gives out birthday freebies to Beauty Insiders when they make a purchase in their birth month. Last year, the freebies were these cleanser and mask from Fresh. I love the cute packaging it came in. I’d been hearing a lot about the Fresh Soy Cleanser so I was happy to receive it.

Fresh Soy Cleanser Review:

I really wasn’t expecting to be impressed with this because I have soooo many cleansers. Also, cleansers are not really an exciting cateogory of skincare for me. I don’t expect too much from them and so long as they don’t dry my skin out or leave me oily or break me out, I’m okay.  It’s like a cleanser is a cleanser is a cleanser, you know?

But this one was actually impressive because it did all of the above and removed my waterproof mascara. Usually waterproof mascara is one of those things that I have to make an extra step tp remove properly and most cleansers don’t just cut it. The Fresh Soy Face cleanser is gentle but effective cleanser I love it.

Fresh Rose Face Mask Review:

I have a lot of mattifying masks, but nothing hydrating or nourishing so I was happy to add this to my collection. It promised to hydrate the skin and my skin definitely felt nourished but not greasy afterwards. I do like it but I’m not sure it will be hydrating enough for dry skin.
Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Water-Gel Toner Review

Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Water-Gel Toner Review

This toner contains bentonite which is always great for oil control. It claims to absorb oil, clarify and minimize the appearance of pores.

The product itself is a mint green lotion, which fits right in with the alien theme. The lotion melts right into the skin and turns watery and absorbs really fast. It’s actually quite fun to use.

The only thing I’m not fond of is the scent. It smells really weird.

I love that this comes in the form of a lotion, so you can rub it into your skin instead of using a cotton pad, if you prefer.

I find it to be mattifying but not drying, and I feel like it helps control oil all day. I didn’t notice any difference to my pores.

I really do like this, and if you don’t mind shelling out the money for it, I think it is a great mattifying toner.

Kate SomerVille Exfolikate Daily Exfoliating Wash Review

Kate SomerVille Exfolikate Daily Exfoliating Wash Review

This is gentle but exfoliating. It has a rather strong citrus fragrance, so if you’re not a fan of strong scents you might want to give it a skip. But it does a really great job as a daily exfoliant and it didn’t irritate my skin or tingle or anything like that.
Glam Glow Supermud Mask and Origins Active Charcoal Mask

Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Water-Gel Toner Review

Glamglow Supermud Mask Review

I really, really didn’t want to like this Glamglow mask, but it is as amazing as everyone says. You can see and feel it working, and it leaves your skin feeling like you just had a fancy spa treatment. It leaves the skin matte and it calms any up-coming blemishes.

I really don’t know that it has any long term benefits, but it contains an extensive list of acids and other promising ingredients, that makes me feel like it could make a difference in the long run.

I am very tempted to pick up a full size of this. It almost feels exactly like the Vichy Pore Purifying Clay Mask, except that the Supermud contains eucalyptus which gives it this invigorating scent and feel. I love it!

Origins Active Charcoal Mask Review

This was just alright. It felt like the 153 other clay masks that I have tried before this. It didn’t do anything noticeable for my pores. I’m indifferent to it, basically. When next I need a regular everyday mask I might purchase it if it readily available. If it is not, I will buy something else. I don’t care either way. What I do want to try from Origins is the Rose Retexturizing Clay Mask.
Fresh Skinberry Skin Nutrition Cleansing Oil Review

Fresh Skinberry Skin Nutrition Cleansing Oil Review

This is a makeup removing oil and it does what it claims to do. It is great for removing makeup. I like it. It has a light pleasant fragrance. If I decide to purchase a makeup remover oil in the future it would probably be this one. Im actually pretty happy with the brand “Fresh” so far.
L’Occitane Amande Milk Concentrate Review

This smells like baby lotion and didn’t do anything drastic for my skin one way or the other. It claims to help reduce wrinkles but as I have none, I don’t think I am in the right position to review this. I have no interest in purchasing a full size.
Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Vitamin C Serum Review

Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Vitamin C Serum Review

Algenist is a brand I have been hearing a lot about but I haven’t gotten around to trying because it is NOT cheap.  The full size of this particular serum costs $118. 😣

Luckily, my fellow skincare loving boo Nike sent me a sample of this and I have been loving it so far.  It is by far the best Vitamin C serum I have used so far in terms of texture and feel. It doesn’t feel greasy, gritty or tacky.

I will probably do a proper review of this once I am done with the sample, but so far, so good.

Everything mentioned here is available at Sephora. Have you tried any of this? What do you think?
