Hey guys! In today’s post I will be reviewing a product from one of Deciem’s less popular brands . Deciem is best known for their newest brand; The Ordinary. But they actually have a lot of other interesting brands. Hylamide is one of those brands, and this post is a review of the Hylamide Matte 12 Finisher.
Mattifying beauty products almost always use a combination of Talc, Starch, Silica and Chalk (Calcium Carbonate) to create a “matte” skin finish. We don’t like these “technologies” because a) they also bind to water, not just oil, and so are drying which is very different than mattifying; b) some of them are bad for you (search about talc-related lawsuits); c) they don’t blend well with many forms of makeup.
Mattifying should not mean drying. In fact, matte skin should be just as comfortable as oily skin. Matte 12 uses advanced elastic spherical polymers that bind to oil but do not make the skin feel dry.
Here are some very good facts about these spheres:
They allow Matte 12 to repel water and bind only to oil so the product doesn’t dry out the skin (in fact, Matte 12 can easily be used on dry skin for a matte finish);
They are elastic and form an incredibly soft finish to the skin;
They are nearly-perfectly spherical in shape (unlike many powders) making them a fantastic base that can work under any makeup (or used happily alone);
Matte 12 is intended for all skin types including dry skin. On most skin types, the effect of the product will last until rinsed, for up to 12 hours. For very oily skin types, an additional application throughout the day may be needed.

Deciem Hylamide Matte 12 Finisher Review
This claims to mattify the skin and blur pores. It claims to work well as the final step in your skincare routine to keep your face matte. It is also supposed to work as an oil-controlling base for your makeup.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it lives up to ALL those claims.
But before we get into that, lets talk formula and consistency. The Deciem Hylamide Matte 12 Finisher has a gel-like consistency. It sinks into the skin nicely and does not leave a cast or add texture. It dries down to a soft silky finish.
Hylamide Matte 12 As A Finisher
This primer keeps my face matte for over 12 hours when I’m not wearing makeup. Which is crazy in and of itself. Usually, even on “no-makeup days” I still have to wear some sort of powder just to keep oil at bay, then I’d have to reapply eventually. Because I’m brown, most of my powders are brown as well, and there’s always the issue of transfer and being cautious around other people’s bright clothing. With this “finisher”, I just put it on in the morning and that’s it for the day. No powders, no oil, no touch-up and no transfer.
I was really impressed because in my experience, mattifying primers tend to look really obvious on the skin and I never wear them without foundation makeup. So it was great to find something that I can wear without foundation.
Hylamide Matte 12 Review – Best Primer For Oily Skin?
Okay, let’s talk about its performance as an actual makeup primer. This matte primer really impressed me not just because it is very good at controlling oil, but because it just improves the wear of my makeup.
Case in point: I tried it with my most problematic foundation which is the Hourglass Vanish Stick Foundation. This foundation usually transfers all over the place. It’s also settles into fine lines and gets really greasy within a few hours. With this primer I did not experience any settling, transfer or excessive greasiness with this foundation, and it has actually rekindled my love for this foundation because the foundation is so beautiful and skin-like with a great coverage. I just couldn’t deal with the transfer and settling and greasiness. But I will definitely be wearing it a lot more now that I have this primer.
It also pairs well with other foundations from other brands as well as The Ordinary foundations. As a primer, its oil control abilities depends on the foundation. It will improve the oiliness of a greasier foundation like the Hourglass one by a few good hours, but it didn’t keep me oil-free for 12 hours with that foundation. And obviously when you pair it with a foundation that is inherently mattifying like the Estee Lauder Double Wear, you will get much better results.
Deciem Hylamide Matte 12 Finisher vs The Ordinary High Adherence Silicone Primer
The Ordinary High Adherence Silicone Primer and Hylamide Matte 12 have a similar formula in terms of how both products look and feel on the skin.
The Ordinary High Adherence Primer is definitely far less mattifying than Hylamide Matte 12, and the Hylamide Matte 12 has a silkier feel to it, which makes me more inclined to wear it alone.
What I found interesting is that when I pair The Ordinary High Adherence Silicone Primer with the Hourglass Foundation, it doesn’t do much to improve the aforementioned problems of that foundation. Whereas the Hylamide Matte 12 completely eliminated the issues I was having with it. So you definitely get a superior formula with the Matte 12.
Hylamide Matte 12 Review: Final Thoughts
So, to recap. This primer/finisher blurs my pores and keeps me oil free both with makeup and without. How well it will work as an oil controlling primer depends on the foundation you pair it with. But overall, I think it is fantastic and I would highly recommend it to anyone with oily skin.
PS: I didn’t notice any “pilling” or balling up with this product. I moisturize my face with a hyaluronic acid serum and let it dry down before I go in with a sunscreen and a primer. This primer worked well with my skincare products.
Here’s what it looks like on the face.
