Hey guys! In this post I will be comparing three of the most popular full coverage concealers that are out right now: Nars Soft Matte Concealer, Tarte Shape Tape concealer and Kat von D Lock It Concealer Creme.
I already reviewed the Nars Soft Matte Concealer here and I compared it to the Nars Radiant Creamy concealer in that review.
I also already reviewed the Kat von D Lock It concealer here.
Today I will focus on reviewing the Tarte Shape Tape and then I will compare all three.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Review
Sculpt and highlight as you mask imperfections with this 2-in-1 full coverage concealer. The hydrating, longwearing formula delivers natural, radiant coverage across all skin types so you can instantly brighten and cover acne, dark circles and redness while softening the look of pores and fine lines. Wear it 1-2 shades lighter or darker, and it works as a creamy highlighter or contouring stick with a lightweight, blendable formula and tapered wand applicator ideal for precise strobing and sculpting. Powered by Amazonian clay and conditioning mango seed and shea butters, the nutrient-rich concealer helps promote skin elasticity and illumination with each crease-free application.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Review : The Good
This is a full coverage concealer, even at just one layer. It lasts all day, and it has incredible staying power, which makes it great for spot concealing. It covers dark circles and acne scars effortlessly.
It is lightweight and blendable.
It doesn’t crease or settle into fine lines.
I’m actually impressed by how much product you’re getting! Most concealers contain 5-6ml of product, and some even contain as little as 1.5ml. The Tarte Shape Tape contains 10ml of product, which is quite generous.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Review : The Bad
The shade range is limited. Undertones are not great. This line is not very black girl friendly and it is in desperate need of expansion and overhauling. I got the shade tan sand and it is supposed to have yellow undertones but it pulled really cool and pink on me. I am not impressed by the shade range at all.
Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Review : The Meh
I do not consider this particularly radiant, creamy or hydrating. And that is not to say it is dull or bad, it’s just that when I think of radiant and creamy I think of Nars Radiant Creamy concealer, and the Shape Tape is simply not as creamy, radiant or hydrating as the Nars Radiant Creamy concealer.
All in all, I think it is an okay concealer, and I do like the formula. I think it’s great for oily skin, and I love the fact that once it sets, it doesn’t budge, crease or fade throughout the day.
I also feel like it may be slightly overhyped. It didn’t wow me. There are better concealers out there. Personally, I will reach for my NYX Photogenic HD concealer, Kat von D Lock It Concealer, and Nars Radiant Creamy concealer before I reach for this.
I would probably like it better if the shade range was better. I hope that is something they will work on in the future. I really hate when my concealer has weird undertones.
The Tarte Shape Tape concealer is available for purchase from the brand website.
Kat von D Concealer vs Tarte Shape Tape concealer vs Nars Soft Matte concealer – Comparison and Swatches.
Hydrating Full Coverage Concealer ?
Tarte Shape Tape is the least hydrating of the three. Nars Soft Matte looks matte but doesn’t make the under eye area look dry. Kat von D Lock It Concealer goes on looking more hydrating than the other two, but once set with powder, it looks just about the same as the Nars Soft Matte when the Soft Matte is also set with powder. Both of them give a soft natural matte look once set with powder. When set with a powder, the Tarte Shape Tape concealer definitely makes my under eye look a little drier than the other two.
Concealer with Highest Coverage ?
Tarte Shape Tape also has the best coverage, but you can definitely build the other two up to Tarte’s level of coverage with no cakiness.
Full Coverage Concealer With Best Shade Range
Tarte has the worst shade range out of the three. I am in between shades, something I usually don’t experience with high end concealers. Nars and Kat von D have a better and more inclusive shade range.
Full Coverage Concealer – Easiest To Apply?
As for application, I find the Kat von D Lock It Concealer easiest to apply. The unique wands gets into the corners of the eyes and the wand just makes it really easy to apply. The Tarte one is the second easiest to apply. I find the extra large wand a little bit impractical for precise application of concealer around the eye or even for spot concealing acne scars. I admit the wand is cute, but it’s not very practical. My least favourite one to apply is the Nars Soft Matte Concealer. I almost didn’t purchase this because I’m not a fan of the jar packaging, but I had the Kat von d Edge Concealer brush and this has been great for both picking up and applying the product. Luckily, the Soft Matte Concealer is really creamy. It is not stiff at all so it is easy to pick up with a brush, but I’d have preferred a packaging where I don’t have to reaach for a brush just to apply this.
Full Coverage Concealer – Creasing?
As far as creasing goes, I have to say I used to experience creasing with the Kat von D Lock It Concealer in the past. That has changed since I started using the Lock It Brightening Powder. The Brightening Powder was made to be used with the Lock It Concealer and it really just takes the concealer to the next level. Together, both leave a beautiful smooth non drying matte finish and my under eye just looks bright and nice.
I love the Brightening Powder so much that I use it with all my concealers now. So I actually set all three concealers here with the Brightening Powder to level the playing field. When set with the Kat von D Lock It Brightening Powder, I didn’t experience any creasing or settling into fine lines with any of these concealers.
Best Full Coverage Concealer ?
Overall, my favourite of the bunch would be the Kat von D concealer. I love the coverage, I love the finish it gives, I love how easy it is to apply, I love the shade I have and its undertones. It is almost like a corrector and a concealer rolled into one product.
The Kat von D Lock It Concealer Creme is available for purchase from the brand website.
Have you tried any of these concealers? Which one is your favourite?
